April 27, 2010 Jana Napoli's "Floodwall"Linda Frye Burnham / 12:05 PM This is a remarkable interview with artist Jana Napoli (founder of YA/YA Inc.) about her traveling installation "Floodwall," 710 drawers from desks, dressers, kitchen cabinets and bureaus that she scavenged from the wreckage left by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, 2005. From the "Floodwall" website: "Napoli constructs her installation in three ways. When it stands as a wall, 8 feet tall and stretching as much as 192 feet, Floodwall is a monument of immeasurable loss; when it lies in serried array on the floor like tombstones in a cemetery, it is a memorial, a sentinel of the past; and when it is configured as a room that envelops the spectator in close intimacy, it has the unutterable loneliness of deep mourning. At all times, this is Napoli’s floodwall against the erasure of the ordinary people and the everyday rhythms of life from which great cities are formed." (Thanks, Inside Stories.) March 30, 2010 Touchstone's Young Playwrights FestivalSteven Durland / 09:34 AM A short documentary about Touchstone Theatre's annual Young Playwrights' Festival, which showcases the writing talents of Lehigh Valley elementary- and middle-school students by staging their one-act plays. Touchstone is based in Bethlehem, Pa. This years festival and gala is set for March 1, 2010, at Zoellner Arts Center.

March 25, 2010 800 Georgia Kids Protest School Music CutsSteven Durland / 02:17 PM Eight hundred student musicians marched into the school gym in Alpharetta, Ga., Monday night, carrying their instruments. They were there to perform together in protest against cuts in the Fulton County school music budget, says Eve Chen on 11alive.com. "Fulton County School Board members voted 6 to 1 Thursday to cut the $4 million a year elementary school band and orchestra programs because of the projected, $120 million shortfall in next school year's system-wide budget. That cut directly impacts 8,000 students, including the more-than 300 4th and 5th Graders performing with the older students Monday night. The 7:00 p.m. cluster concert featured orchestras from New Prospect Elementary, Lake Windward Elementary, Creekview Elementary, Manning Oaks Elementary, Hopewell Middle, Webb Bridge Middle and Alpharetta High." March 23, 2010 MondoBizarro & M.U.G.A.B.E.E: Race PeaceLinda Frye Burnham / 11:18 AM Southeastern U.S. artist companies MondoBizarro (New Orleans) and M.U.G.A.B.E.E (Mississippi) will lead a workshop at Performance West in April, based in their collaborative project "Race Peace." About it they say: "We attempt to reach back to the beginning—to the point where racial stereotypes first take root—through an innovative blend of multi-disciplinary performance techniques and town-hall style meetings. We believe that by peeling back our histories to arrive at those formative moments, we can create a space for intervention, a space for performance to step in and help participants to actively pursue solutions." RACE PEACE - Workshop Promo from Bruce France on Vimeo. Performance West, at Cal State Northridge, April 8-11, 2010, is "a resurgence of the long-standing performance festival held at San Francisco State University." It supports performance work dedicated to cultivating social justice that "interrogates, narrates, critiques and offers visions and strategies for social change within an unjust world." March 16, 2010 Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective in NOLALinda Frye Burnham / 11:03 AM This is a truly moving 2007 video about conditions for children in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. It was made by Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective, a group of ethnically diverse dance companies in Philadelphia that has been conducting summer dance camps for NOLA kids every summer since 2006. They also have camps in Philadelphia and, in 2010 they hope, in Haiti. |
